Shower filter: use, installation and cartridge change

Does chlorine in your shower bother you? The shower filter is placed in the water path to the head and processes it before it reaches you, giving you the ability to filter in the bathroom without changing the entire installation.
The Olympus bathroom filter costs €45. It is manufactured in Greece by Center Plus SA and is connected to the spiral, with an activated carbon and antimicrobial copper cartridge that is replaced after 12 months or 30,000 liters of use, whichever comes first. The spare part costs €30.

What filters into bath water?
Filtration is done at the point of use. Although the bathroom water comes from the same supply that supplies the kitchen, the sink filter only processes the water that passes through it. For the shower, choose a bathroom filter.
The Olympus bathroom filter retains chlorine, asbestos, pesticides, lead and other heavy metals, as well as solid particles, according to the product characteristics. The description of the replacement cartridge also mentions arsenic, hexavalent chromium, mercury and nickel.
Chlorine is used to disinfect the water in the network, while the filter reduces it at the point of use, after the water has reached the house and passes to the shower. For the kitchen, see how to reduce chlorine in drinking water.
You can also consult your water provider. EYDAP publishes residual chlorine measurements on its open data platform, where each entry links the value and unit of measurement to the sampling point and date. Look at the location and date together. This way you read a measurement in its context and can discuss your choice based on your supply data.
Chlorine reduction and hardness reduction are different functions. If the reason you are looking for a filter is for scale in your taps or water heater, you need to consider a solution for salts. The article How does a water softener work? explains the processing in the central supply.
How is it made?
The chamber is made of stainless steel. The base with the threads is made of brass, while the device has dimensions of 7 × 17 cm and a weight of 0.85 kg. Inside it is the replacement cartridge. It combines the following materials:
- Activated carbon, with NSF/ANSI 61 certification which is mentioned in the product characteristics.
- Antimicrobial copper alloy, for the reduction of chlorine at high temperatures and the antibacterial protection of activated carbon.
The combination of these materials supports filtration in the bathroom and antibacterial protection inside the filter.
The reference to NSF/ANSI 61 concerns activated carbon
The NSF/ANSI 61 concerns the substances that may be transferred to the water from materials and components in contact with it. In the Olympus bathroom filter, the mentioned certification concerns the activated carbon material.
The copper alloy inside the cartridge is referred to as CW606N and is used in the form of shavings. The activated carbon, copper alloy and brass in the base have their own role in filtering and antibacterial protection of the interior.
Do you need to change your shower faucet?;
Keep the head you are already using. The Olympus bathroom filter is a separate chamber in the spiral path, unlike a showerhead with an integrated filter, in which the head and filter are a single product.
Measure the available space first. The 7 × 17 cm dimensions help you see where the filter will be placed, so the battery and coil remain handy and the chamber accessible when it's time to change.
Look at the bathroom as you use it every day. If the spiral is located near a shelf, wall or other fixture, compare the available space with the dimensions of the device and its installation plan. A photo of the connection helps with the selection. You can use it when asking for clarification, so that the discussion is about your own faucet and the position in which the filter will be placed.
How is it connected to the spiral?
The Olympus installation diagram shows the device between the battery outlet and the coil. First turn off the tap. The steps it illustrates are:
- Unscrew the spiral from the shower faucet outlet.
- Screw the filter into the position where the spiral was connected.
- Connect the spiral to the bottom of the filter.
Installation is done without tools or a technician. Follow the drawing and instructions that come with your device and, when you have completed the connection, turn on the water to check the joints. Keep the instructions for the next change.
Each filter serves the shower to which it is connected. If you use a second shower, place a separate filter there as well, while for the kitchen water, choose a device that connects to its own tap or under the sink.
For two showers, the cost of the devices is €90, based on a price of €45 per filter. Two replacement cartridges cost a total of €60. Monitor the use of each shower separately: if, for example, one serves the whole family daily and the other is used occasionally, the consumption and the time to fill the liter limit will differ.
Cost and cartridge change
The device remains in place when you replace the cartridge. The limit is up to 12 months or 30,000 liters, whichever comes first, so in higher consumption it may need to be changed before the time is up. And in the shower that is used less, you schedule the change up to 12 months, even if the liter limit has not been reached.

To change, turn off the water supply. Unscrew the chamber following the device's instructions, replace the cartridge and note the installation date on a calendar or on a sticker in the bathroom cabinet. The company also sends you a reminder on your mobile phone.
Time counts from installation. If you purchase the spare part earlier to have it available, keep separate the date of purchase and the date you put it in the device, so that you can monitor its duration of use. Also note the type of cartridge. The next time you order, you will be able to refer to the same spare part without having to search from the beginning which filter serves your bathroom.
Order the bathroom filter cartridge. Kitchen spare parts have different usage limits and are intended for the respective appliances. The guide which cartridge fits your appliance gathers the options, while the article How often should you change a water filter? explains maintenance by category.
How does it combine with the kitchen filter?
The shower filter and the kitchen filter serve different points of use. The Olympus antimicrobial water filters Above or below the counter are intended for the water you drink and use in cooking. The bathroom filter is intended for shower water and has a different cartridge.
Organize the maintenance of each device separately. For detailed specifications and instructions, see Olympus bathroom filter.
